Developing story.
Thousands of people lined Venezuela’s highways on Sunday, October 25, to greet the caravan of opposition leader María Corina Machado as it left Lara state and moved through Yaracuy, Carabobo and Aragua toward Caracas, Spanish news agency EFE reported.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate had announced on social media hours earlier that she was back in the country after more than 10 months in exile. According to EFE, she traveled in armored vehicles, and hundreds of supporters wore the color of her party, Vente Venezuela.
In a video posted on her X account at 6:15 p.m. ET with the message “Viva Venezuela!”, Machado showed her vehicle moving through a crowd of supporters on the highway.
Inside María Corina Machado’s caravan
The trip began after Machado attended Sunday Mass at the shrine of the Divina Pastora in Santa Rosa, Lara, her first public appearance since returning. Venezuelan outlet El Pitazo, which was at the scene, reported that she arrived during the service, greeted supporters and left shortly after 1 p.m. local time; former political prisoner Alfredo Ramos was among those present. From there, the caravan took the main highways linking western Venezuela with the capital.
Along the route, supporters chanted that they would not leave her alone, EFE reported. As of this writing, Machado had not spoken to the press. Before returning, she had said her return would help move the transition forward.

Venezuelan outlet El Pitazo reported that hundreds of supporters filled the Regional Highway of the Center near Guacara, Carabobo, and that hundreds more gathered in the Santa Mónica neighborhood of Caracas, where Vente Venezuela announced a stop.
No incidents along the route or arrests linked to her return have been reported.
Rubio credits U.S. mediation for her return
Secretary of State Marco Rubio credited Washington’s mediation for Machado’s return, according to EFE. Dinorah Figuera, who heads the opposition delegation in talks with the chavista government, likewise said her return in freedom resulted from those U.S.-backed talks.
The government of acting president Delcy Rodríguez had not commented publicly on her return at the time of writing. According to Reuters, Machado flew by private plane from Panama to Colombia and entered Venezuela overland.
Background and what comes next
Machado left Venezuela in December 2025 to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, after more than a year in hiding. Since Nicolás Maduro’s capture in January 2026, Delcy Rodríguez has governed as acting president, and no date has been set for a presidential election.
