U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday, Nov. 1, at a Republican rally in Salina, Kansas, that no president in his lifetime has done a better job than Donald Trump of keeping Americans safe, two days before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

His remarks were captured in a video posted on X by Rapid Response 47, the White House’s official rapid-response account.

Marco Rubio spoke briefly at the event in Hangar 509 at Salina Regional Airport after Trump called him to the stage, using his remarks to praise the president’s national security record.

“The most important job every President does is keep you and your families safe — and no President in my lifetime has done that better than the one we have right now,” Rubio told the crowd.

He added: “Because he’s our president, America’s stronger. You’re safer, and our enemies are weaker all around the world.”

Rubio did not offer specific figures or comparisons with previous administrations in those remarks.

Trump’s remarks and the Salina rally

Before handing over the microphone, Trump joked that Rubio was getting “a little bit too popular.” After Rubio spoke, the president quipped, “I’m sorry, you’re fired,” then praised him, saying he will go down as “the best Secretary of State.”

The Salina event was part of Trump’s swing through Iowa and Kansas ahead of the midterms, following an earlier stop in Dubuque. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas, who is seeking reelection against Democrat Adam Hamilton, also attended.

Trump went over the main themes of his midterm campaign, including immigration, public safety and the economy, and urged supporters to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to keep Republican control of Congress.

The Nov. 3 midterm elections

Tuesday’s elections will determine the makeup of the U.S. Congress. In Kansas, besides the Senate race between Marshall and Hamilton, voters will choose a governor and representatives for the state’s four congressional districts. The Senate contest has drawn national attention in a traditionally Republican state: a recent CNN poll showed Hamilton ahead of Marshall, within the margin of error.

Rubio serves as both secretary of state and national security adviser, a post he had held on an acting basis since May 2025 and took on permanently in September, and has been one of the most visible foreign policy figures of Trump’s second term. His Salina appearance came one day after the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting wrapped up in Atlanta, where he addressed reporters on issues including talks with Iran.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s schedule

It is unusual for a secretary of state to appear at campaign events, since those who hold the post typically stay out of partisan politics. Rubio had already joined Trump on stage at a rally in Texas on Oct. 27. According to the State Department’s public schedule, he was due to meet Venezuelan Foreign Minister Oliver Blanco at the department on Monday, Nov. 2.
